Integrated Network Management Broadband
PG OC 98-13
Issue 1.2
Using the GNE, the INM user can choose to tailor the set of SOC included in
each view, to selectively exclude network elements from each view, to “lock”
a group (hiding its contents from GNB users), to control the set of users which
have access to each view, to filter the alarms displayed for each network
element in a view and to control operations available on specific network
elements in a view.
Graphical Network Editor
The INM system administrator through the GNE defines and maintains the
graphical representation of the S/DMS TransportNode, S/DMS AccessNode,
and SONET Radio network, as well as the various MOAs such as the DV45
Video Codec, and the Tellabs Titan 5500 Digital Cross-Connect.
Before invoking the GNE

, the administrator has to initially create the
federation through the administration script on each of the workstations that
will be part of the federated network. In particular, Preferred Path Lists have
to be created for Indirect Clients and Access Lists for Indirect Servers. After
having done that, the administrator is ready to create the network and
subnetwork display. In order to do that, the system administrator first chooses
between two types of connections: direct or indirect. He then enters the IP
address of each controller to be monitored by the INM into the GNE Add a
Controller dialog, as shown in Figure 2 on page 33.
When the controller IP address has been entered into the GNE Add a
Controller dialog, and the direct connection is chosen, the INM will attempt to
connect to that controller and if the validation of the IP address is successful,
it automatically discovers the NEs defined in the controller’s span of control.
For OC-12/48 Bidirectional Line Switched Ring (BLSR) and Linear systems,
and for OC-192 4FR systems, the INM automatically discovers the ring
configuration and displays the BLSR connections graphically. If the indirect
connection is chosen, the INM will attempt to connect to that controller via
another INM. The default value of the “Connection Type” field is direct
connection.
From the GNE, the user may login to the primary or backup Controller that
manages the NEs. This login can be initiated from a network window or a
subnetwork window. The GNE also allows the user to login directly to the
individual NEs.
Graphical Network Browser
The network and subnetwork displays created by the GNE are used by the
GNB to monitor and control the network. The user, through the GNB,
monitors the S/DMS TransportNode, S/DMS AccessNode and Radio systems
as well as the various MOAs such as the DV45 Video Codec, the Tellabs Titan
5500 Digital Cross-Connect and the OC-3 Express for alarm conditions.
1
Creating the federation only applies if the INM will be used as part of a federation. For a standalone INM,
no federation needs to be created.
