INM Broadband Release 4.1
PG OC 98-13
Issue 1.2
The INM user monitors the entire network for alarms through the graphical
network display. Alarm conditions are quickly identified and isolated through
graphical alarm attributes applied to the network elements. These attributes
include colors to distinguish alarm severities, balloons to indicate new alarms,
textual notations to indicate the number and severity of alarms, and audible
indications. Balloons and textual notations allow color blind people to use the
INM without missing any alarm information when monitoring the network.
With a simple hierarchical network map display, users can monitor the current
network status in a single glance and have point-and-click access to any
subnetwork, system, or shelf-level operation.

The INM provides a graphical view of protection switching status and traffic
routing in OC-12 and OC-48 Linear and BLSR, as well as in OC-192 4FR
BLSRs. For BLSR fiber spans, the INM will display active spans, troubled
spans, and unprotected spans for which protection switching has occurred due
to fault conditions. This capability may be utilized when testing system
responses due to high speed fault conditions on BLSR systems.
When monitoring the network, the user can quickly determine the overall state
of the network that he is allowed to view through the information displayed in
the alarm banner, shown in Figure 3 on page 34. The alarm banner displays a
summary of all the alarm counts in the set of network elements that the user is
allowed access to and which are monitored by the INM.When an alarm
condition occurs, the user will be able to quickly identify the location of the
alarm within the network display of the GNB. Once the NE with the alarm
condition has been located, the user may view the active alarm details.
