Centralized Software Management
The INM Broadband provides a centralized facility for the delivery of new
software releases to OPCs (or NPCs in the case of the OC-3 Express), making
it possible to perform software upgrades from a central location. With this
feature, significant time and cost savings can be achieved by virtually
eliminating the need to dispatch a craftsperson with the tape to remote sites.
For OC3/OC12/OC48/OC192 and AccessNode systems, a software release
consists of the OPC and NE software loads required to upgrade a span of
control in a network. In the case of OC-3 Express systems, a software release
consists of only NE software loads.
There is minimal performance impact on surveillance during the electronic
software delivery. The OPC processes the incoming information from an
electronic software delivery at a lower priority than other processes such as
alarm collection and alarm forwarding to the INM Broadband. In the case of
the OC-3 Express however, the maximum bandwidth is used by the MOA to
deliver the software to the NPCs.
The centralized software management feature allows a user to extract a
compressed software release from a Digital Data Storage (DDS),
electronically deliver the new software and perform upgrades through the
remote login capabilities provided in the GNE and GNB. The user upgrades
the OPC and/or NE software by logging into the primary OPC and invoking
the Network Upgrade Manager (NUM)

. It is the NUM that handles all aspects
of upgrading the OPC span of control with the software that has been delivered
to it from the INM Broadband.
