Installing a PKM 16 (Mini-DSS Unit)
The Programmable Key Module 16 (previously known as the Mitel 8416 Mini-DSS Unit) provides
16 additional user-programmable buttons and connects directly to the Mitel 8520, 8560, and 8660
phones. PKM 16 units are physically attached to a special cable pin connector. Because the PKM
16 draws power from the phone, external AC transformers are not required. PKM 16 units are optional
equipment.
Unpack and inspect the PKM 16. Install each PKM 16 as outlined below. For diagrams of the

To install a PKM 16:
1. Lift and remove the original faceplate using the notch on the faceplate edge of the phone. The
original faceplate can be returned to Mitel for recycling.
2. Remove the original phone facemats and set them aside for later use.
3. Turn the phone over so that the PKM 16 access panels located on the bottom of the phone are
accessible. The recess beneath the top access panel houses the pin connector for the PKM 16
cable.
4. Remove the screws from the access panels and set them aside for later use.
5. Remove the access panels from the phone. The phone access panels can be returned to Mitel
for recycling.
6. Turn the PKM 16 over and pull a section of ribbon cable measuring 1¾ in. (4.5 cm) from the unit.
7. Plug the cable from the PKM 16 into the pin connector on the phone.
8. Guide the “arms” of the PKM 16 into the access panel slots.
9. Secure the PKM 16 to the phone by replacing and tightening the screws removed from the
access panels in step 5 .
10. Turn the phone, and attached PKM 16, over. Replace the original facemat on the phone and
place the PKM 16 facemat on the PKM 16.
11. Snap the PKM 16 faceplate into place covering the facemats.
NOTE
Avoid removing more cable than the recommended 1¾ in. (4.5 cm). The excess cable may be
difficult to return to inside the PKM 16.
