52xx/53xx and 86xx Phone Differences
The following are differences in behavior between 52xx/53xx IP phones and 86xx multi-protocol
phones.
• When using a 52xx/53xx phone, you cannot use the handset or speakerphone when the phone
is in Headset Mode. 86xx phones allow you to use the handset or speakerphone when the phone
is in Headset Mode.
• 52xx/53xx phones automatically save volume levels (you do not have to press the center of the
Volume button to save volume levels as with 86xx phones). Also, saved volume levels do not
return to the default state after using the feature (86xx phones return to the default volume levels
after use if you do not press the center of the Volume button to save the volume level).
• The 5212 and 5304 use half-duplex audio when using the speakerphone (both parties cannot
talk at the same time). The 5224 and other 53xx phones use full-duplex audio.
• 52xx/53xx phones register input when buttons are released. 86xx phones register input when
buttons are pressed.
• 52xx/53xx phones can display 20 characters on each display line—86xx phones display 16
characters.
• 52xx/53xx phones have a different set of ring tones than 86xx phones.
• 52xx/53xx phones do not have external speaker activation tones when feature buttons are
pressed (for example, DND, Redial, Outgoing)—86xx phones do.
• 52xx/53xx phones have different feature error alert tones (for example, when an incorrect feature
code is entered). 86xx phone alert tones resemble a “busy signal.” 52xx/53xx phones use four
short tones for error alerts.
• The feature splash tone on 52xx/53xx phones (the tone heard on the handset when features
are activated) interrupts the voice audio stream. With 86xx phones, the tone and the audio stream
are heard at the same time (the tone is in the “background”). On a 52xx/53xx phone, feature
activation tones supersede (interrupt) the audio stream.
• The DND alert tone generated on a 52xx/53xx phone differs from the DND alert tone generated
on a 86xx phone.
• Speakerphone (handsfree) volume is generally lower on 52xx/53xx phones when compared to
86xx phones. This includes both DTMF and voice audio.
• The 5330 and 5340 phones have Navigation Page buttons located below the LCD to navigate
between the three display pages. If you navigate to the second or third pages, you must use the
Navigation Page buttons to return to the first page. (You are not automatically returned to the
first page after using features or when the phone is idle.) The Home button ( ) on the 5340
also returns you to the first page.
NOTE
These display enhancements to the 5330/5340 IP phones are included as standard features
with the 5320 IP phones.
NOTE
86xx multi-protocol phones in SIP mode are not supported on the MiVoice Office 250
platform. See page 275 for changing from SIP mode to IP mode.
