Chapter 6: Analyzer Operation
It is recommended that TOC be measured whenever the sample may contain significant concentrations of
volatile organic compounds that would be lost from the solution if NPOC were measured.
Range
The Analyzer has five ranges (see Table
). Select the range that best matches the most likely TOC levels in the
current sample. The range can be used for a sample that has a concentration less than the range listed in
Table
. For example, the 5,000 ppm range could be selected for a sample that is expected to contain 85 ppm
of TOC.
However, it is important not to exceed the upper limit in each range. (For example, a sample thought to contain
more than 5,000 ppm must not be analyzed in the
5,000 ppm
range. One of the two higher ranges must be
selected.) If a sample having too high a concentration is analyzed, the organics may not be completely oxidized,
and the reactor may become fouled with partially oxidized organic material. At best, the Analyzer will require a
significant time to rinse that material out of the reactor and high-pressure valves. At worst, the reactor may
require disassembly and cleaning.
If you do not know the approximate TOC level in your sample, then you can use the Auto Range function, as
described in the following table.
Auto Range
Use the Auto Range setting to let the Analyzer determine the best range for the current sample. The Analyzer
makes a preliminary measurement to determine the best range match, then enters normal analysis mode.
If you are using the Analyzer’s Auto Range function, you will need to specify a calibration group to use with the
protocol. For more information, see
“Calibration Groups” on page 114
Table 12: Analyzer Ranges with Default Reagent Settings
The following ranges for the InnovOx Online TOC Analyzer are based the default reagent settings of
1% acid and 15% oxidizer, with the exception of the Up to 100 ppm range, which is based on 1% acid
and 5% oxidizer.
