Chapter 6: Analyzer Operation
Rinse
The Rinse option provides an easy way of rinsing down the Analyzer after maintenance or after measuring a
very high concentration.
To use the Rinse feature
1. Remove the check standard tube from the Check Standard carboy, and place the tube in a container of
low-TOC water.
2. On the
Setup
tab, press the
Check Standard
button. The
Check Standard Setup
button appears to the
right.
3. Press the
Check Standard Setup
button. Verify that the
Check Standard
button that appears on the
upper left of the screen as “Enabled.” If it does not, enable the Check Standard. (Press the
Check
Standard
button, and then press the
Enabled
button.)
4. Press the
Back
button to return to the
Setup
tab.
5. Press the
Rinse
button, and then press the
Start Analysis
button. The Rinse process starts.
6. Press the
Main
button to view the measurements as the Analyzer rinses down.
7. Press the
Stop Analysis
button to when you determine that the rinse is adequate. Return the tube to the
Check Standard carboy.
Measurement Settings
Measure
The Analyzer allows you to make NPOC, TOC, TC, and IC measurements. NPOC is measured by adding sample,
acid, oxidizer, and dilution water to the Sparger. The solution is mixed, and any IC in the solution is converted to
CO
2
by the acid. Then, CO
2
-free gas is bubbled through it to remove that CO
2
. A portion of the sparged solution is
then introduced into the Reactor, where the organics in the solution are oxidized to CO
2
and are subsequently
measured in the NDIR.
When TOC, TC, or IC is measured, acid is added to the sample for each of these measurements, but oxidizer is
not added when IC is measured. The sample, reagents, and dilution water are mixed, but the solution is not
sparged so that it retains as much IC as possible. However, some IC is lost from the solution because it has been
acidified. The amount of IC lost is dependent upon the amount of acid added and the nature of the sample.
TOC measurements are made by measuring both TC and IC on the sample, and calculating the TOC by
difference (TOC = TC - IC). In order for the TOC measurement to be as accurate as possible, the solution is
introduced into the Sparger prior to loading the Reactor.
