Glossary of Terms
This glossary provides definitions for acronyms and terms used in
this Operator’s Manual.
Absolute Red Cells
Red cells ONLY, at a hematocrit of 100%.
AC
Alternating current, as in the current obtained from an
electrical outlet.
ACD
Anticoagulant Citrate Dextrose.
Air Detector
A sensor that detects air passing through the disposable
kit lines.
Air Embolism
A bubble of air obstructing a blood vessel.
Anticoagulant
A solution used to prevent the blood from clotting.
Anticoagulant Scale
A platform scale on which the anticoagulant container is
placed for a procedure.
Anticoagulated Whole Blood
Whole blood removed from the donor that has been
mixed with anticoagulant to prevent it from clotting.
Apheresis
The process of collecting a specific blood component and
returning other components to the donor.
Bar Code Scanner
A hand-held device that allows information to be
electronically entered into the procedure information
record.
