System Overview
The A
LYX
instrument and disposables constitute an automated
apheresis system. This system relies on a centrifuge to separate
donor blood into its components. During a collection procedure,
a pneumatic pumping system controls fluid flow through a sterile,
disposable kit. The instrument withdraws and processes donor
blood in cycles. Each cycle consists of the following two phases:
•
Draw phase - Blood is drawn into both the centrifuge and the
in-process container while the desired blood component(s)
are separated by centrifugal force.
•
Return phase - Blood that accumulated in the in-process
container during the previous draw phase is sent to the
centrifuge to be separated while the remaining blood
components not being collected are returned to the donor.
As blood components are returned, a 0.9% sodium chloride
(normal saline) solution is returned to the donor to compensate
for volume loss.
Icons, tabs, buttons, and prompts appear on the touch screen to
guide the collection process. There are also icons on the
instrument and disposable kits that assist with loading the kit. A
list of the graphics and their meanings is provided in the
Glossary.
