A/B Roll Editing
This is a style of video editing. It is a method in which you play back two or more video sources
at the same time and edit while switching between the video sources being played back. It was
originally a method of linear editing in which video from two or more video decks was played
back in synchronization, with editing and recording carried out on a recording-use video deck
while switching the playback video using a device called a switcher.
Aspect Ratio
This refers to the ratio of the vertical and horizontal dimensions of the screen. Conventional
video has a ratio of 4 (horizontal) to 3 (vertical), and high-definition television and wide-screen
television have a ratio of 16 (horizontal) to 9 (vertical).
CD-ROM
This refers to type of compact disc (CD) used as read-only storage media (ROM). Because a CD-
ROM can hold several hundred times more than a floppy disk and is unaffected by magnetic
fields, it is widely used to store important data such as software programs.
Color Bars
This is a reference signal for reproducing and adjusting colors on a color screen. Vertical bars
of color are arranged in increasing luminance levels from left to right across the screen.
Composite
With this system, the luminance, color, and other signals are combined (composited) and sent
as a single signal. Because the cabling used to carry the signal is simple, this system offers the
advantage of video transmission at low cost. This has made it the most commonly used system
for consumer-use video transmission. Because multiple signals are carried together, the picture
quality is not very high.
dB (Decibel)
The DV-7DL PRO uses this unit of measurement to indicate the amplitude of the volume level.
The unit indicates the amount of amplification or attenuation with respect to a reference
volume level.
Drop Frame
With the NTSC format, when playback is carried out at a speed of 30 frames per second, the
time-code count deviates from the actual time, so compensation to 29.97 frames per second is
performed. Video that is compensated in this way is called "drop frame" video. Video which is
not compensated and remains shifted is called "non-drop frame."
DV Port
This is a connector based on a standard known as IEEE1394, established by the Institute of
Electrical and Electronic Engineers of the U.S.A. This standard defines two types: a 6-pin type
and a 4-pin type. The two types differ in having or lacking power-supply lines. Almost all DV
cameras and VCRs are equipped with a 4-pin connector, and this is called a DV jack.
Depending on the manufacturer, this may also be called "FireWire" or "i.Link." The DV-7DL
PRO is equipped with one DV jack each on the front and rear.
Fade
The gradual appearance of video and sound from a blank state or silent state is called a "fade
in."
The reverse, where these gradually disappear, is called a "fade out." The process of carrying out
an audio fade in and fade out simultaneously is called "cross fade."
File
This refers to a collection of data on the DV-7DL PRO. For example, an "image file" is a
collection of data for displaying images.
Font
This refers to the typeface of text. The DV-7DL PRO contains English and Japanese fonts, but
English fonts cannot be used to display text consisting of Japanese characters.
