Subnet
.
A subnet is the portion of an IP address that must be common between computers
for direct communication to occur. Special hardware (routers) is required for
computers on different subnets to communicate. The subnet is defined by an IP
address and a subnet mask. IP addresses and subnet masks are written in dotted
decimal notation (each group of numbers is separated by a period).
To determine your subnet address, examine your subnet mask. For example, if an
IP address of 169.254.17.26 has a subnet mask of 255.255.0.0, the subnet address
would be 169.254. If an IP address of 192.168.12.34 has a subnet mask of
255.255.255.0, the subnet address would be 192.168.12.
