IP Addressing Commands
ip address dhcp
The
ip address dhcp
Interface Configuration (Ethernet, VLAN, port-channel) mode command acquires
an IP address for an Ethernet interface from the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) server.
Use the
no
form of this command to deconfigure an acquired IP address.
Syntax
•
ip address dhcp
[
hostname
host-name
]
•
no ip address dhcp
•
host-name
— Specifies the name of the host to be placed in the DHCP option 12 field. This name
does not have to be the same as the host name specified in the
hostname
Global Configuration
mode command. (Range: 1-20 characters)
Default Configuration
This command has no default configuration.
Command Mode
Interface Configuration (Ethernet, VLAN, port-channel) mode.
User Guidelines
•
The
ip address dhcp
command allows any interface to dynamically learn its IP address by using the
DHCP protocol.
•
Some DHCP servers require that the DHCPDISCOVER message have a specific host name. The
ip
address dhcp
hostname
host-name
command is most typically used when the host name is provided by
the system administrator.
•
If the device is configured to obtain its IP address from a DHCP server, it sends a DHCPDISCOVER
message to provide information about itself to the DHCP server on the network.
•
If the
ip address dhcp
command is used with or without the optional keyword, the DHCP option 12
field (host name option) is included in the DISCOVER message. By default, the specified DHCP host
name is the globally configured host name of the device. However, the
ip address dhcp hostname
host-
name
command can be used to place a different host name in the DHCP option 12 field.
•
The
no ip address dhcp
command deconfigures any IP address that was acquired, thus sending a
DHCPRELEASE message.
Example
The following example acquires an IP address for Ethernet port 1/e16 from DHCP.
Console(config)#
interface ethernet
1/e16
Console(config-if)#
ip address dhcp
