Starter Overcrank Protection
To prevent overheating and
possible damage or fire, the
starter motor is equipped
with an overcrank protection
system. A thermostatically
controlled mechanical circuit
breaker is installed adjacent to
the starter brush ground lead.
The breaker connects to the
starter magnetic switch (see
Figure 9-19). When starter
temperature reaches the dan-
ger point, the circuit breaker
opens, interrupting the ground
circuit to the starter magnetic
switch and de-energizing the
solenoid. When the motor
cools to a safe operating tem-
perature, the circuit breaker
automatically resets, allowing
the starter to operate again.
Starter Maintenance and Overhaul
Other than periodic lubrication and keeping cable connections clean and tight, the starter should require
no periodic maintenance. The starter must be removed and partially disassembled to replace the brushes.
Starter Removal
1. Place the Battery Disconnect switch in the OFF position.
2. Place the
IGNITION SELECT switch in the OFF position.
3. Remove the 24V and Ground cables from the starter.
4. Secure a suitable strap around the starter and remove the bolts from the mounting holes.
5. Pull the starter out of the engine block and carefully remove it from the engine compartment.
6. Inspect the flywheel teeth if you see pinion damage, to avoid damaging the new starter. Replace
the flywheel/ring gear if necessary.
