DIMM Slot Numbering and Color Coding
Each CMOD contains 12 DIMM slots arranged in two groups of six slots. Each group of slots
is controlled by one of the four memory buffers. Each buffer has two independent memory
channels, Ch A and Ch B (six memory channels per CMOD). Each channel supports 1-6
DIMMs and has six assigned DIMM slots.
Channels 0, 1, and 2 are located on one side of the processor, and channels 3, 4 and 5 are on the
other side of the processor. To differentiate the two memory channels within a group of slots,
and to assist in DIMM population order, the six DIMM slots assigned to each channel have
color-coded slots and levers. The color-coding is black slots with black levers, and white slots
with white levers.

DIMM Population Scenarios
There are two scenarios in which you are required to populate DIMMs:
■
A DIMM fails and needs to be replaced.
In this scenario, you can use the Fault Remind button to determine the failed DIMM, then
remove the failed DIMM and replace it. To ensure that system performance is maintained,
you must replace the failed DIMM with a DIMM of the same size (in gigabytes) and type
(64-GB quad-rank (QR) Load-Reduced DIMMs (LRDIMMs) and 32-GB dual-rank (DR)
and 16-GB DR Registered DIMMs (RDIMMs). In this scenario, you should not change the
DIMM configuration.
■
You have purchased new DIMMs and you want to use them to upgrade the server's memory.
In this scenario, you should adhere to DIMM population rules and follow the recommended
DIMM population order for optimal system performance.
