7.9 Monitoring Respiration (Resp)
7.9.1 Understanding the Resp Display
The Resp measurement is displayed on the patient monitor as a continuous wave and a
numeric respiration rate (RR).
By selecting the waveform area, you can enter the [
Resp Waveform
] menu. By selecting the
Resp parameter window, you can enter the [
Resp Setup
] menu.
NOTE
z
Respiration monitoring is not for use on the patients who are very active, as this
will cause false alarms.
7.9.2 Placing Resp Electrodes
Since the same electrodes are used for ECG and respiration monitoring, correct electrode
placement is very important. Some patients, due to their clinical condition, expand their
chests laterally, causing a negative intrathoracic pressure. In these cases, it is better to place
the two respiration electrodes in the right midaxillary and left lateral chest areas at the
patient’s maximum point of the breathing movement to optimize the respiratory waveform.
NOTE
z
When monitoring the patient’s respiration, ESU-proof cables should not be used.
z
To optimize the respiration waveform, place the RA and LA electrodes
horizontally when monitoring respiration with ECG Lead I; place the RA and LL
electrodes diagonally when monitoring respiration with ECG Lead II.
z
To reduce cardiac overlay or artifacts from pulastile blood flow, avoid the liver
