2.1.16. COLD LOAD PICKUP
2.1.16.1. DESCRIPTION
This function aims to avoid non wanted trips when the line is energized after being
de-energized for a period of time; in this situation the load can exceed the protection
setting without the presence of a fault. The function detects those conditions and
changes the trip settings for a programmable time.
The function is activated when the current in the 3 phases is below 10% of the
nominal relay current for a time greater than the “Cold load time” configurable
parameter indicates. This is interpreted by the smART P500 as a load loss situation.
Once activated, the protection’s usual settings are replaced by the cold load pick-up
settings. These cold load pick-up settings will remain active until at least one of the
measured currents rises above 20% of the nominal relay current, remaining there for
the configured “Pick-up time”, time after which the function is deactivated and the
cold load pick-up settings are replaced by the usual settings. So, there are two
configurable times for this function, named “Cold load time” and “Pick-up time”,
besides the desired IOC and TOC settings to be in effect during the cold load pick-up
period.
