Figure 1-17 Block diagram of smART P500 relay
The core of the relay is a DSP (a CPU optimized for digital signal processing). This CPU
constitutes the intelligent core of the smART P500. The DSP runs the protection, metering,
storage, and communications algorithms. A Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA)
complements the DSP, assisting in the control tasks of the signal acquisition process,
input/output ports, button control, light indicators (LEDs), and IRIG-B signal decoding. It
also performs some of the basic calculations for the protection functions.
As a complement for the formerly mentioned core, the smART P500 contains the following
elements:
FLASH memory (up to 8MB). Stores the operating program of the relay (firmware),
the configuration and historical data. The Flash memory preserves its contents even
when the relay has no power supply. However, its contents may be modified, so the
firmware can be field updated, without any hardware changes. 50 MHz SPI Access.
First Memory is currently used for loaders, firmware, texts, bitstream, factory settings
and standard configuration.Virtually everything except the first loader has a backup
