7.1. INTRODUCTION
Protocol IEC 6870-101 is an IEC (International Electrical Commission) international
standard for telecontrol tasks. This protocol is used for monitoring energy systems, control
systems and the communications associated to them. It is compatible with IEC 60870-5-1
and IEC 60870-5-5 standards. IEC 6870-101 standard is used with serial communications.
Protocol IEC 6870-104 is an extension of the IEC 6870-101 standard and includes changes
in the services provided by layers above the application layer in order to make possible the
use of other communication media, mainly Ethernet, using the network interface TCP/IP.
IEC 6870-104 application layer remains equal to the one in IEC 6870-101; there are
changes only in the link layer.
7.2. INTEROPERABILITY
The following describes the characteristics of IEC 60870-101 protocol as implemented at
the smART P500 relay.
