8BCONTROL FUNCTIONS
PROTECTION, CONTROL AND METERING FUNCTIONS
of affected customers is minimized. The algorithms operate locally, are automatic and
do not require any operator intervention to achieve its objectives.
Although they have the same goal, each mechanism has its pros and cons. As its
name suggests, the reconfiguration mechanism "with communication" requires a
medium of communication that allows the exchange of information among the relays
protecting the line. On the other hand, the algorithms "without communication" do not
require such a medium. The mechanism "without communication" sometimes
requires an additional close-onto-fault operation to effectively clear the fault and the
mechanism "without communication optimized" requires that there is at least one
reclosing cycle to properly isolate the fault.
The four algorithms assume a distribution line fed from both ends with an
intermediate point (tie) which is initially open. When a fault occurs on the line, the
algorithms clear it and then reconfigure the circuit by closing the tie switch.
Currently, the only reconfiguration algorithm available in the smART P500 is the one
based on the voltage-time coordination.
2.8.1.2. NETWORK RECONFIGURATION WITHOUT
COMMUNICATIONS (VOLTAGE-TIME)
Its operation is autonomous and independent, so it needs no master unit or operator
to run the automation scheme. As its name implies, it requires no communication
between its elements, although it is always advisable to have a communication
channel to a control center for easy operation
Figure 2-67 shows an example of implementation of this algorithm on a distribution
line with 2 feeders.
