Software Loading Using AltBoot
CAUTION
The AltBoot procedure erases the customer Optional Services (Network Scanning; E-Mail;
Internet Fax; Network Accounting; Server Fax; Hard Disk Overwrite; Xerox Standard Account-
ing (XSA). Check with the customer, that they have the necessary codes to enable their
Optional Services and they can restore any configuration information for the installed options.
NOTE: To restore the XSA data, use the customers XSA data backup (clone) file on the cus-
tomers PC. Refer to the Customer Administrators Guide CD.
PWS Configuration
NOTE: This procedure will vary, dependent on which version of Windows is being used.
NOTE: It may be necessary to record the current network settings if they are being used by
another application.
1. If possible, print a copy of the latest configuration report.
2. Disable the PWS Wireless Network Connection and the PWS Windows Firewall.
3. Set the proxy server setting on the PWS. Perform the following:
a. Open Start / Control Panel / Network and Internet Connections / Network Connec-
tions / Local Area Connections.
b. Open Local Area Connection.
c. In the General tab, click on the properties button.
d. Highlight the Internet Protocol (TCP / IP) icon.
e. Click on the Properties button.
f. Select Use the following IP address.
NOTE: Before changing the proxy server settings, record the original IP address and
Subnet mask. The original settings must be reset at the end of this procedure.
g. Refer to the configuration report for IP address of the machine. Set the IP address of
the PWS one number higher than the machine. For example, if the IP address of the
machine is 192.168.196.112, set the IP address of the PWS to 192.168.196.113.
h. Refer to the configuration report for Subnet mask of the machine. Set the Subnet
mask of the PWS to the same as the Subnet mask of the machine.
NOTE: A default gateway setting is not required.
i. Click on OK to close the properties dialog box.
j. Click on OK to close the Local Area Connection Properties dialog box.
k. If any settings have been changed, reboot the PWS if it is not running Windows XP.
AltBoot Hardware and Software
Hardware requirements:
• Serial cable, PL 26.10 Item 12
• 9 way gender changer, PL 26.10 Item 1.
• Ethernet crossover cable, PL 26.10 Item 6
• Correct machine PWS Diagnostic Tools.
Software requirements:
• Linux.netboot - Linux Kernal File.
• kfs*.gz - Linux Root File System File.
• *.dim - Image File.
These files are found on the System Software CD.
AltBoot Procedure
It is important to perform the steps that follow before attempting an Altboot:
1. Ensure that the network controller is powered down.
2. Remove the network controller ethernet cable so that it is not connected to the local net-
work.
3. Connect the special crossover ethernet cable from the laptop network port to the network
controller network port.
4. Connect the null modem serial cable from the laptop serial port to the network controller
serial port.
5. Start the AltBoot Application.
6. Power on the network controller.
7. When the AltBoot application is complete. Enable the PWS Wireless Network Connection
and the PWS Windows Firewall.
AltBoot Process - Stage 1
After a few seconds a message similar to the following will appear:

Press any key for the AltBoot menu (05)
You have five seconds to press a key in the AltBoot Terminal Window to interrupt the normal
boot process. It is necessary to do this to let the network controller know that we wish to per-
form an AltBoot.
When interrupted the following menu is displayed in the terminal window:
