5. MCEs
Structure
Differences
Notable differences between the MCEs and older MCPMs include:
• Audio output is embedded (except for the optional AXM outputs).
• MCE audio and video connectors are coax (1.0/2.3 DIN) connectors; MCPM audio and video
connectors are BNCs.
S
Breakout panels are available. These 1RU panels provide 16 DIN-to-BNC conversion chan-
nels. Each BNC connector on the panel is coupled to a 2 m cable with a DIN connector.
• MCEs have 2 clean feed outputs; MCPMs have 1.
• MCEs have 2 aux outputs and 2 (extra) source inputs; other MCPMs do not have these.
• All MCE audio outputs carry 16 embedded audio channels; MCPM audio output varies. Certain
MCPMs offer analog audio output.
• MCEs have preview and aux buses. Other MCPMs do not.
• MCEs have 16 audio channels. MCPMs have 8.
• MCEs support machine control and pre-roll.
• MCEs support Intuition XG subsystems (i.e., stored video keys).
There are other differences.
Program and Preset Buses
The MCE’s program and preset buses are functionally the same as the program and preset buses of
other MCPMs, except that each supports 16 audio channels.
The MCE’s audio path differs from the other MCPMs’ audio paths. Audio monitoring and metering
is
very
different.
Audio Processing Section
When an operator or automation chooses a video source for preset or for program, the MCE selects
its associated audio inputs also.
Audio can either be disembedded from the video source or it can be discrete (present on a connec-
tor). Discrete audio for MCEs is always AES. Any audio input can be Dolby E encoded if the MCE
has Dolby E decoders.
MCEs can be configured with 2, 4, 6, or 8 Dolby decoders (on the AXM card). There are 3 ways
the decoders can be allocated. (See
Audio Expansion Module
on page 94 for the locations of the
decoders.)
• The default. (Refer to Figure 5-1.)
Decoders A and B support program and preset main audio.
Decoders C and D support program and preset over audio and, in particular, audio for enhanced
squeezeback’s image 2.
Decoders E supports preview main audio.
Decoders F supports preview over audio, including audio for enhanced squeezeback’s image 2.
Decoders G and H are not needed.
