Appl ication Notes
External router sources can be main sources, over sources, key sources, and squeeze images. Each
type must be enabled individually. The configurer should enable only what is needed because ERS
consumes inputs ports:
Main sources require up to 12 ports (in pairs).
Key sources require (usually) 6 connectors, but you can get by with 3 if all you have are self-
keys.
Over sources require up to 8 connectors, but if all overs are embedded, 2 will suffice.
Squeeze backgrounds requires 1 connector.
Squeeze image 2 requires 1 connector.
Router sources and destinations are typically multi-level (one video level, multiple audio levels)
and unless all your video has embedded audio, you must connect a cable for each level. This
applies primarily to main sources, but also to key sources, and over sources.
Caveats
An external main source must be added to the main source list as an ‘External Router Input’.
An external key source must be added to the keyer source list as an ‘External Router Input’.
An external over source must be added to the over source list as an ‘External Router Input’.
An external squeeze source must be added to the
main
source list as an ‘External Router Input’.
Further, the main source must be chosen in either the squeeze1 or squeeze2 settings. (A panel oper-
ator has some discretion in choosing squeeze sources.)
The MCPM configuration limits the number of sources:
Main sources
≤
128, 64, or 16, depending on the MCPM
Key sources
≤
8
Over sources
≤
4
Squeeze2 sources
≤
32
Squeeze background sources
≤
32
(Local squeeze 2 images are also defined as main sources.)
Linking Two MCPMs as Primary and Backup
You can use the external video and audio bypass inputs to provide a form of redundancy for the
master control system, by cross-connect two MCPMs, as shown in Figure C-2.
The bypass relay within the MCPM will switch to the bypass input when a fault occurs. You can
switch to bypass manually using (1) the toggle switch on the front of the MCPM, (2) an emergency
bypass control panel, or (3) by pressing a button on a master control panel.
Control functions for the two MCPMs can be configured so that the two track each other as the
operator performs transitions to air. If automation is used, a separate connection from the automa-
tion system to each MCPM is needed.
This approach does not prevent using the backup processor as a second channel occasionally. Its
program outputs can be used to provide a second program feed when backup operation is not
needed. Although this is not shown here, routing functions could be used to allow a single MCPM
