3. Frames
Chapter 3 describes the NV5100MC and NV5128-MC frames, their I/O cards, and their connec-
tors. It presents the following topics:
• Overview
• Connectors
• Input (and Output) Cards
• Other Modules
Refer to Appendix B, Specifications , on page 171 for connector details and other technical details.
Overview
The NV5128-MC frame is an adaptation of the design of the NV5128 Multi-Format Router (MFR).
Master control and the MFR, in fact, coexist in the same frame. The master control architecture
both supports and uses the MFR if it is present.
The NV5100MC frame is a newer version of the NV5128-MC frame. It is the same size as the
NV5128-MC frame, accepts the same control cards and power supplies, and accepts the same I/O
cards

as the NV5128-MC frame. In addition, it allows multiple SWB and 3Gig I/O cards and pro-
vides additional throughput for up to 8 HD MCEs.

Except for the legends on the door, the NV5100MC frame is indistinguishable from an
NV5128-MC frame.

The two frames are nearly identical in function. However, the constraints on the way you can
populate the card slots differ slightly for each frame.

Frames ship pre-assembled (with I/O cards, backplanes, etc.) according to the equipment you
ordered with the frame.
If the frame contains a multi-format router (MFR), you will have to use UniConfig and the NV9000
configuration tools to set up the MFR. Please refer to the
NV5128 MFR User ’s Guide for more
information.
UniConfig takes only a short time if you know what to do. Deciding how your router(s) will work
with master control is a bigger task. Contact Miranda (or visit www.miranda.com) if you wish to
receive an application note (AN0004) that presents a case study.
