3. Frames
Overview
Each slot is divided by the motherboard with “backplanes” to the rear and I/O cards (a.k.a. matrix
modules) to the front. The backplane modules provide I/O connectors and allow a choice of con-
nector types for certain I/O cards.
Matrix modules slide into the frame from the front. Each module, whether input or output, has a
companion backplane module that fits into the frame from the rear. Signals enter and exit the cross-
point through the backplane connectors. The motherboard spans the frame and distributes input and
control signals, timing, and power. Backplanes and I/O modules plug into the motherboard.
Numbering
The numbering of the slots is sequential, from 1 to 16, but the connector numbers in slots 13–16 are
in reverse order. These are the connectors, as seen from the rear:
All backplane connectors are numbered 1 at the top and 16 at the bottom. This is true regardless of
the type of connectors.
