4. MCPMs
MCPM Architecture
This list shows the meaning of various clip and gain values above:
You might prefer to think in terms of high/low or foreground/background, rather than clip/gain. To
convert from high/low or foreground/background use these formulas:
Clip = (high+low) / 2 = (forbackground) / 2
Gain = 1 / (high–low) = 1 / (foreground–background)
A key limiter keeps the key signal between –0.5 and +0.5.
S Shaping
An optional S-shaper smooths the key signal at the transitions between the linear portion of the sig-
nal and the limited portions. It does this by applying the cubic transform shown below to the key
signal.
S
If the key signal is shaped externally (ahead of the keyer module), then do not select the S-shap-
ing option (in MasterConfig).
The final output of the clip/gain/limiter (with or without S-shaping) is translated by the following
equation:
K
O U T
= K
IN
+ 0.5
At this point, the key signal varies from 0.0 to 1.0. A key value of 0 means the corresponding point
in the key fill is transparent. A key value of 1.0 means that the corresponding point is fully opaque.
Any value in between 0 and 1 means that the corresponding fill point is partially opaque (when it
mixes with upstream video).
A
When gain is 0, luminance output is a flat 50% “gray.”
B
When gain is 1 and the clip point is at 50%, luminance output is equal to the input.
C
When gain is 4 (or more) and the clip point is at 50%, luminance output is mostly
black or white with a limited or very limited midrange.
D
When gain is 1023 and the clip point is at 50%, luminance output is all black or white
with virtually no midrange. Displayed keyer pixels are either transparent or opaque
with no intermediate values.
E
When the clip point is at 0%, the output is mostly white.
F
When the clip point is at 25%, the dark tones ramp quickly to white and most tones are
light or white.
G
When the clip point is at 75%, most tones are dark or black and light tones ramp
quickly from black to white.
H
When the clip point is at 100%, the output is mostly black.
