5. MCEs
Chapter 5 describes the MCEs. It presents the following topics:

• Structure
• Assembly
• Summary
Statement of Function
“MCE” stands for “master control engine.” An MCE is a specific and newer type of MCPM.
MCEs are the “next generation” of master control transition processors. MCEs are different enough
from previous MCPMs to warrant their own chapter. MCEs are configurable through MasterCon-
fig, as are all MCPMs.
MCEs perform all the functions of the earlier MCPMs and provide additional capabilities. Func-
tions discussed in the preceding chapter,
MCPMs , are available in the MCEs. The most prominent
new features are the preview bus , the aux bus , and 16-channel audio. MCEs are also modular , com-
prising from 1 to 3 circuit boards and a number of optional daughter cards.
MCEs have features that work in conjunction with the “next generation” control panels, the CECP,
CECP M1, CECP GUI, and the FECP. MCEs also work in conjunction with the video and audio
timing page of MasterDiag.
Most of the development of the MCE has been completed. The fully developed MCE offers:
• Hot-swaps. No electrical hazard when backplanes and board are mismatched.
• Field configuration for SD or HD at these rates:
525i/59.94 and 625i/50.
1080i/50, 1080i/59.94,
720p/50, and 720p/59.94.
• Video reference type — NTSC, PAL, and tri-level sync.
• Up to 64 discrete video inputs (1–64) and 64 discrete audio inputs (65–128) from the frame’s
backplane.
• Video and audio input from a nearly unlimited number of router sources.
• Execution of router salvos.
• LOS matte generator.
• Internal black/silence generator, configurable as a main source.
• Program, preset, preview, and aux processing paths (i.e., buses).
• All transition types, normal and preset black.
• Three keyer effects, 2 logo effects, squeezeback and enhanced squeezeback. (The effects occur
in fixed order.)
