2-2.4.2. Oil Sumps
IOF-550 C, N, & P model oil sumps are stamp-pressed aluminum alloy. The IOF-550-B
& R engine oil sumps are cast aluminum alloy with engine mounting legs provisions. The
sump is held to the crankcase sump mount flange with bolts, washers, and lock washers.
The oil sump assembly incorporates a tapped drain plug boss, plug, and crush washer to
facilitate draining engine oil. The drain plug boss safety wire provisions to secure the oil
drain plug after proper torque.
The oil suction tube extends from the oil sump to the oil pump inlet boss providing oil
pickup and flow path. The opposite end of the pickup tube on all models has a crush
washer installed on the end of the suction tube. This tube protrudes through the crankcase
and is bolted to the crankcase oil pump inlet. Two holes are stamped in the sump to
accommodate the speed sensor assembly umbilical connectors. The two nineteen pin
connectors send crankshaft position information to the Engine Control Units through the
engine low voltage harness.
2-2.4.3. Oil Cooler and Oil Temperature Control Valve
Oil flowing from the oil pump enters the oil cooler inlet where it is directed upward to the
cooler core by the cast oil gallery. When the oil is below normal operating temperature
the oil temperature control valve (vernatherm) is open allowing oil to flow through the
center by-pass portion of the oil cooler.
When oil temperature reaches 180°F the oil temperature control valve expands blocking
oil flow. Oil flow is then re-directed through the oil cooler core. As the oil flows through
the cooler core, cooling air fins between the core oil passages dissipate excess heat from
the oil maintaining normal operational oil temperatures. Oil then flows from the cooler
out to the camshaft and crankshaft left main oil gallery.
The IOF-550-standard engine features mechanical oil pressure and temperature sensors
installed in the oil cooler. IOF-550-N, P, and R optional electronic sensors are form/fit
replacements for the mechanical sensors to interface with the serial bus controller via the
oil pressure/temperature wiring harness to supply oil temperature and pressure status to
the ECP.
