ACCESSORY RELAY (R4)
Accessory Relay General Information
The accessory relay powers a variety of acces-
sories such as lights, a winch, 2WD/4WD actuator
and controls, as well as DC power outlets.
Whenever power is on the vehicle, the accessory
relay is closed. However, during engine starting,
from 60 to 800 RPM, the ECM opens the ground
circuit to the relay coil. The relay opens and re-
duces the electrical load on the battery and en-
sures maximum battery voltage is available to the
starter and engine circuits for proper starting.
NOTE: Relay may be inverted by 180° at installa-
tion and still function correctly. Ensure relay ter-
minals are properly aligned with fuse holder at in-
stallation.

4. Fan relay (R1)
The easiest way to check a relay is to remove it
and temporarily replace it with another relay not
essential for immediate engine operation (e.g. ac-
cessory relay or cooling fan relay). If the applicable
system then functions normally, replace the relay.
If the system does not function with the replace-
ment relay, reinstall the relay and test the applica-
ble system wiring/connectors.
Relay Continuity Test
Remove relay.
Using the Fluke 115 multimeter (P/N 529 035 868)
set to the
position, probe relay as per following
table.

Connect battery as shown in following illustration
and probe relay again as per following table.

If relay failed either test, replace it.
