Interaction with the PDS
•
Wildcard searching on surnames, previous names, forenames and dates of birth
are possible from both the ID and LX screens. To search for someone on the
PDS born sometime in 1960 for example, you can enter a date of “
..1960 ” (or
“ //1960 ”). To search for someone on the PDS born in March 1960, you can
enter “ .3.1960 ” (or “ /3/1960 ”).
To initiate a wildcard search on a patient’s surname, previous surname or
forename you must enter at least two characters, followed by an asterisk (*).
For example, entering “MA*” will search the PDS for anyone whose first
forename begins with “MA”, such as “Mark” or “Martin”.

Only the first forename entered on the ID or LX screens, or received from
the practice will be used in the search of the PDS
.

AJ-BOAJ processing is largely unchanged by the enhancements to the NHAIS
system. However, in place of the pop-up boxes used by the ID, LX and AR
screens (see later in this chapter), AJ-BOAJ will use a series of exclusion codes
to determine what action is taken depending on the response it receives from
the PDS. If a transaction is allocated an exclusion code it can be viewed on the
LX screen.
Detailed information on the LX screen/AJ-BOAJ exclusion codes can be found
in
Appendix B of the HA/GP Links Registration User Reference Manual .
For the registrations of births the following guidance applies.
•
NHAIS will interact with the PDS for registrations of births by checking the
provided NHS number against the PDS.
•
AJ-BOAJ will allow automatic processing if the provided 10 digit NHS
number is verified against the PDS and no differences are found.
•
The LX and ID screens will reject old format NHS numbers. Births registered
without an NHS number will be traced against the PDS in order to ascertain an
NHS number.
What happens as a result of the trace request depends on the response from the
PDS. These responses are described later in this chapter.

On the LX screen you are allowed to update a birth registration without an
NHS number and with a status of “A”, “U” or “X”. However, you won’t be
able to immediately update a birth registration without a 10 digit NHS number
with a status of “I”.
•
On the ID screen, if the NHS number has not been traced, you will not be able
to update the ID screen. You will have to either change or remove the NHS
number to initiate another advanced trace on the PDS.
•
Also on the ID screen, you will not be able to update a birth registration
without a 10 digit NHS number.
For registration types 2–5 the following guidance applies.
•
Registrations without an NHS number, or with an old format NHS number will
be processed as they were in Stage 1.
•
AJ-BOAJ will assign an exclusion code appropriate to the response received
from the PDS.
