uniquely identify each address in the united Kingdom.
Patient Record
The Registration details relating to an individual patient, i.e. name,
address, etc.
Postcode
An alphanumeric code, of at least five characters, used by the Post Office
to identify the postal area, district and sector within the district. Postcodes
can be separated into
Outcodes
and
Incodes
. These are explained below,
for the postcode EX4 6DW.
Outcode
EX4 is the outcode comprising the postal area EX and the district 4.
Incode
6DW is the incode. 6 represents a district sector, while the two alphabetic
characters identify a group of addresses within the sector. Postcodes can
represent a maximum of 100 addresses, although the average number is
15.
Printer
A machine that prints computer

Qualifier
The code used in conjunction with a
key
to select a particular screen and
its functionality.
Related Address
Code
The unique code assigned by the HA to enable the substitution of
alternative locality, town or county details to an Address Code during PAF
address matching.

Data sent between two systems, referring to one patient, and performing a
specific function.
Transmission
The sending of one or more transactions between two systems.
Update
The term used when new information is added to a database, or existing
information is changed in some way.
Unlinked
An association between the Postcode Address File (PAF) and the patient
address has been broken or has never been set up.
Validate
The term used to indicate that the system has checked data against known
rules and found it to be satisfactory.
ZZZ100
An HA-defined dummy GP code. The function of user-defined codes will
depend on local policy. However, the ZZZ100 code is typically used to
register non-NHS patients for participation in health programmes such as
screening.
