Limitations on the Calculated Distance
Because of the limitations of the distance calculation, it may be that the postcode with
the shortest calculated distance is not in fact the nearest postcode to the patient.
For example, it could be that a patient is reported as being 1.4km from postcode A and
1.5km from postcode B. However, if accurately measured from the patient’s letterbox
to the letterbox of the pharmacy, it could actually be that the patient really lives 1.7km
from Pharmacy A and 1.3km from Pharmacy B. So, if we only reported the “nearest”
postcode for the patient (postcode A), this might then be manually checked and found
to actually be 1.7km with a conclusion reached on that basis (without it being realised
that the patient actually also resides some 1.3km from postcode B).
Email Contents
The email will have a subject of ‘Patients within
x
km of provided postcodes’, where
x
is the input distance. The email is sent from

calculated because they either do not have a postcode or the postcode does not
have a grid reference recorded.
•
The name and location of a UNIX file listing the exceptions, if patient details
were requested.
Download File Formats
The UNIX download of patient details, if requested, will be a tab-delimited file with a
filename of the format:
•

CCYYMMDDHHMMSS
.txt
where
cipher
is the NHAIS system cipher and
