31 MGCP/SCTP/IUA CONFIGURATION
This chapter provides an overview of MGCP, SCTP and IUA and describes the tasks involved in
configuring them. For detailed information on command syntax and usage guidelines for the
commands listed in the configuration tasks refer to Chapter XX, “Gateway MGCP Mode”, and
Chapter XX, "Gateway IUA Mode" in the SmartWare
Command Reference Guide.
More commands are
described in Chapter XX, “ISDN Port Configuration” in the SmartWare
Command Reference Guide.
This chapter includes the following sections:

31.1 Introduction
MGCP/SCTP/IUA are protocols concerned with the transport of ISDN and analog (POTS) signaling
over a packet based (IP) network. While SCTP/IUA are companion protocols used for the
transparent transport of ISDN signaling layer 2 primitives, MGCP provides the functionality for fine
grain analog (POTS) call control as well as ISDN bearer channel control plus some management
functions (maintenance control).
SCTP is a transport protocol akin to TCP but with some enhancements that make it well suited for
secure transport of signaling messages. MGCP/IUA are sometimes dubbed SIGTRAN (SIGnaling
TRANsport) which expresses the concept of transporting signaling information (ISDN Q.921
primitives) over a packet based network.
Figure 30-1 depicts the basic configuration concept for MGCP/SCTP/IUA.
