Average Burst Power
In radiocommunications (TDMA) and radar, etc, the RF is radiated in the form of bursts. In addition to
the peak envelope power, it is also of interest to measure the average power during the burst, especially
with a modulated envelope (with an unmodulated envelope the two parameters are equal). The average
bust power is a measure of the output signal strength hence closely linked to the coverage that can be
achieved.
The NRT provides two measurement modes, but the AUTO mode is not supported by all sensors:

Average burst power
In both modes, the average burst power is calculated by the NRT from the average power and the duty
cycle (Fig. 2-5). It is equal to the amplitude of a squarewave pulse sequence having the same average
power which is contained within the PEP characteristic. The duty cycle may either be entered in the form
of known values
(USER)
or automatically determined by the sensor
(AUTO).

If provided with this function, the sensor automatically
measures the average burst power.
This applies also to multiple bursts and to duty cycles vari-
able in time. To ensure proper operation of the automatic
function, the video bandwidth has to be defined in a sub-
menu.
If the limit values defined in the specifications for the power
or duty cycle are underranged, the NRT displays "---" in-
stead of a measured value.
