Using a Modem 340

Sending Brief Messages and Files

Besides having a conversation, there are four other ways to send

information to another computer or word processor:

S

Typing and sending a message using the Message choice on the Edit

menu. Use this method when messages are brief and spontaneous,

and you want to send them immediately to the other computer or

word processor.

S

Sending text that you have copied into the clipboard.

S

Sending an ASCII text file to the other computer or word processor.

An ASCII text file is the same as a DOS text file. ASCII text files are

created in Text File Editor.

S

Sending files using XMODEM. Use this method to send a file or a

large amount of information to another computer or word processor.

XMODEM checks for errors to make sure files arrive intact.

Sending brief messages

The Message option on the Edit menu allows you to create brief messages

before you are connected to another computer or word processor (before

you enter protocol or terminal settings) or after you are connected to

another computer. It gives you time to write and edit your message before

sending it.

The Message choice does not check for errors. In other words, all you

type may not reach the other computer. This is usually not a problem for

short messages like: Hello, how are you?" If a message this brief gets

corrupted by a poor connection and arrives Hello, how are you?" the

receiving party can probably figure the message out.

However, the Message option is not acceptable for sending a long file or a

large amount of information. Suppose you are sending your income tax

figures to your accountant, and the number that represents your gross

income is corrupted. What started out as 35,000.00" may have arrived as

$&5*#00.00." Your accountant is not likely to figure this out. To send long

files, see Sending text files using XMODEM" on page 342.

To send a brief text message:

1. Insert Diskette 2.
2. Click on the File Manager icon on the Main Menu.
3. Double-click on Communications.
4. If you have not connected to the other computer, see Getting Ready to

Communicate" on page 336.

5. Choose Message from the Edit menu.
