Inserting Special Characters
You can insert special characters in a document that display dates, times,
andnumbers. Special characters are useful because they save you from
typing andcalculating information. For example, if you want the current
date in a letter template to be updated each day, use a special character
insteadof retyping the date.
A page break is another kindof special character. For more information,
see Page Breaks" in this chapter. You can search a document for these
special characters. For more information, see Finding and Replacing Text"
on page 97.
Inserting the current date
You can insert the current date in a document. You might do this to put a
date at the top of a letter or in a memo. You can specify either of two
formats: longhandor numeric. Alternatively, you can insert special date
characters to add the current date in a different format. For more
information, see Inserting Special Dates" in this section.
"
To insert the current date:
1. Position the insertion point where you want to insert the current date.
2. Choose Insert Special from the Edit menu.
A submenu appears.
3. Select the date format you want from the submenu:
S
Longhand Date
. This option inserts the current date in a
longhandformat (such as Friday, December 31, 1996").
S
Numeric Date.
This option inserts the current date in a numeric
format (such as 12/15/96").
Word Processing inserts the
current date in the format you
selected. The date is entered just
as if you had typed it yourself. It
is automatically updated.
