This bulletin replaces Service Bulletin GEN-008.
Bloodborne Pathogens - Pathogenic microorganisms that are present in human blood can cause
disease in humans. These pathogens include, but are not limited to, Hepatitis B virus (HBV) and Human
Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). The Center for Disease Control (CDC) states that the Hepatitis B virus
(HBV) can survive for several weeks (or months) in dried blood on environmental surfaces or
contaminated needles and instruments.
Pathogenic microorganisms require a direct route into the body for them to cause disease in humans. A
direct route can be considered a break in the skin, such as a cut, a burn, a rash, or through acne. Certain
openings in the body, such as the eyes, can also be considered a direct route.
Precautions - Employees should take an approach that assumes all blood and body fluids encountered
in the workplace are potentially infected with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) or Hepatitis B Virus
(HBV), or other bloodborne pathogens.
Personal Protective Equipment - Disposable LATEX gloves are available to all employees who
anticipate having hand contact with blood, other potentially infectious materials, mucous membranes, and
non-intact skin; and when handling or touching contaminated or potentially contaminated items, materials,
or equipment. The disposable gloves shall not be washed or decontaminated for re-use.
