Shielded Cables for LAN, WAN and DMZ Connections
Compliance with CE requirements on electromagnetic capability of communication systems
and their LAN, WAN and DMZ connections requires the following:
●
Communication systems may only be operated using shielded connection cables. This
means that a Category 5 shielded cable (CAT.5 cable) at least 3m in length must run be-
tween the shielded LAN, WAN and DMZ connection ports on the communication system
and the connection to the building installation or to external active components. The cable
shield on the end of the cable connected to the building installation or external active com-
ponents must be grounded (connected to building potential equalization).
●
On shorter connections with an external active component (LAN switch or similar), you
must also use a Category 5 shielded cable (CAT.5 cable). However, the active component
must have a corresponding shielded LAN port, whose shielded port is grounded (connect-
ed to building potential equalization).
●
Shielding properties on the cable components must fulfil the requirements of the European
EN 50173-1 “Generic cabling systems” norm and the links contained therein at the least.
The European EN 50173-1 norm is derived from the global ISO/IEC 11801 norm.
●
Building installations equipped with consistently shielded, symmetrical copper cables ac-
cording to the requirements laid out in Class D of the EN 50173-1 norm fulfill the conditions
set out above. Class D can be achieved, for example, by installing Category 5 (CAT.5)
components (cables, terminal boxes, connection cables, etc.).
●
In the North-American market, UTP cabling (US EIA/TIA 568 A norm) is usually installed.
Therefore, in this region, the following applies to LAN connections: communication sys-
tems can only be operated using shielded connection cables. This means that a Category
5 shielded cable (CAT.5 cable) at least 3m in length must run between the shielded LAN,
WAN and DMZ connection ports on the communication system and the connection to the
building installation or to external active components. The cable shield on the end of the
cable connected to the building installation or external active components must be ground-
ed (connected to building potential equalization).
●
For LAN connection to modules in LTUs, please refer to the notes on shielded connections
on the LTU frame outlet point.
