BATTERY/CHARGING SYSTEM

TROUBLESHOOTING

BATTERY IS DAMAGED OR WEAK

1. BATTERY TEST

Rem ove the battery (page 19-6).

Check the oattery condition using the recom m ended battery tester (page 19-7).

RECOMMENDED BATTERY TESTER: BM-210 or BATTERY MATE or equivalent

Is th e b a tte ry g o o d c o n d itio n ?

- Faulty battery.

YES

- GO TO STEP 2.

2. CURRENT LEAKAGE TEST

Install the battery (page 19 6).

Check the battery current leakage test (page 19-7).

Is th e cu rre n t leakage b e lo w 3 m A ?

YES

- GO TO STEP 4.

- GO TO STEP 3.

3. CURRENT LEAKAGE TEST W ITHOUT REGRETTER/RECTIFIER CONNECTOR

Disconnect the regulator/rectifier connector and recheck the battery current leakage.

Is th e c u rre n t leakage b e lo w 3 m A ?

YES

- Faulty regulator/rectifier.

- • Shorted w ire harness.

• Faulty ignition switch.

4. ALTERNATOR CHARGING COIL INSPECTION

Check th e alternator charging coil (page 19-8).

Is th e a lte rn a to r ch a rg in g c o il resistance w ith in 0.1 - 1.0 Q (20 C /68 F)?

- Faulty charging coil.

YES

- GO TO STEP 5.

5. CHARGING VOLTAGE INSPECTION

M easure and record the battery voltage using a digital m u ltim eter (page 19-6).

Start the engine.

M easure the charging voltage (page 19-7).

C om pare :he m easurem ents to result o f the follow ing calculation.

STANDARD: Measured BV < Measured CV < 15.5 V

• BV = Battery Voltage (page 19-6)
• CV = Charging Voltage

Is the m easured ch a rg in g v o lta g e w ith in the s ta n d a rd voltage?

YES

- Faulty battery.

- GO TO STEP 6.

6. REGULATOR/RECTIFIER SYSTEM INSPECTION

Check the voltage and resistance at the regulator/rectifier connectors (page 19-8).

A re the results o f checked v o lta g e a n d resistance correct?

YES

- Faulty regulator/rectifier.

- • Open circuit in related w ire.

• Shorted w ire harness.

• Loose or poor contacts o f related term inal.
