BATTERY/CHARGING SYSTEM
SERVICE INFORMATION
GENERAL
AWARNING
• The battery gives off explosive gases; keep sparks, flam es and cigarettes away. Provide adequate ventilation when
charging.
• The battery contains sulfuric acid (electrolyte). Contact w ith skin or eyes m ay cause severe burns. W ear protective
clothing and a face shield.
- If electrolyte gets on you r skin, flush w ith water.
- If electrolyte gets in you r eyes, flush w ith w ater for at least 15 m inutes and call a physician im m ediately.
• Electrolyte is poisonous.
- If swallowed, drink large quantities o f w ater or m ilk and call you r local Poison Control Center or a call a physician
im m ediately.
NOTICE
• A lw ays tu rn o f f the ig n itio n sw itch before disconnecting a n y e lectrical com ponent.
• Some electrical com ponen ts m a y be dam aged i f te rm in a ls o r connecto rs are connected o r disconnected w h ile the ig n i
tion sw itch is tu rn e d to ON an d cu rre n t is present.
• For extended storage, rem ove the battery, give it a full charge, and store it in a cool, dry space.
• For a battery rem aining in a stored motorcycle, disconnect the negative battery cable fro m the battery term inal.
• The battery sealing caps should not be removed. A ttem pting to rem ove the sealing caps fro m the cells m ay dam age the
battery.
• The m ainterance free (M F) battery must be replaced w hen it reaches the end o f its service life.
• The battery can be dam aged if overcharged or undercharged, or if left to discharge for long period. These sam e condi
tions contribute to shortening the "life span" of the battery. Even under norm al use, the perform ance of the battery dete
riorates after 2 - 3 years.
• Battery voltage m ay recover after battery charging, but under heavy load, the battery voltage will drop quickly and
eventually die out. For this reason, the charging system is often suspected as the problem . Battery overcharge often
results from problem s in the battery itself, which m ay appear to be an overcharging sym ptom . If one of the battery cells
is shorted and battery voltage does not increase, the regulator/rectifier supplies excess voltage to the battery. Under
these conditions, the electrolyte level goes down quickly.
• Before troubleshooting the charging system, check for proper use and m aintenance of the battery. Check if the battery
is frequently under heavy load, such as havinc the headlight and taillight ON for long periods o f tim e w ith o u t riding the
motorcycle.
• The battery w ill self-discharge w hen the motorcycle is not in use. For this reason, charge the battery every 2 weeks to
prevent sulfation from occurring.
• W hen servicing the charging system, alw ays follow the steps in the troubleshooting flo w chart (page 19-5)
• For alternator service, refer to page 12-4.
BATTERY CHARGING
• Turn pow er ON/OFF at the charger, not at the battery term inal.
• For battery charging, do not exceed the charging current and tim e specified on the battery. Using excessive current or
extending the charging tim e m ay dam age the battery.
• Quick charging should only be done in an em ergency; slow charging is preferred.
BATTERY TESTING
Refer to the battery tester's O peration M anual for the recom m ended battery testing procedure.
The recom m ended battery tester puts a "load" on the battery so the actual battery condition of the load can be measured.
Recommended b attery tester: M icro 404XL (U.S A. only), BM-210 or equivalent
