This chapter provides information concerning SCNs, Service Classes, and commands for adding SCNs.
Service Class Name Details
An SCN is an ASCII string associated with a predefined set of QoS parameters provisioned in the C4/c CMTS. As such it:
Has a maximum length of 15 characters and is case-sensitive.
Cannot include spaces unless the name is enclosed in quotation marks. For example, "Gold Service".
The SCN is defined in the cable modem configuration file, and is expanded to its defined set of QoS parameters at the time
the C4/c CMTS successfully admits the Service Flow (SF).
Service Flows
The SCNs are referenced by configuration files when defining SFs. The SFs contain classifiers that determine which packets
are included in the SF. The QoS parameter set determines how the packets in the SF are treated.
Note: If there are parameters defined in the config file that are also defined in an SCN referenced by that config file, the
config file parameters override those found in the SCN. If you define an SCN in a config file but do not define it on the C4/c
CMTS, you will receive an error and registration will be denied.
Cable Modems
The config files use the classifier information as part of setting up the SFs that govern the levels of service awarded to cable
modems. When a cable modem registers, its configuration file causes an SF to be created using the QoS parameters
defined by its SCN.
Billing Operations
SCNs impact billing operations because they identify SF counters that are used in the MIBs and in the billing records.
Major Functions
The major functions of the SCN include:
