The class B address is used for networks with more than 256 (2

) workstations. The first 16 bits identify the
network. The remaining 16 bits are used as host IDs. The class B
address begins with the numbers 128 through 191.
The class C address is used for networks with less than 256 (2

)
workstations. The first 24 bits identify the network. The remaining 8
bits are used as host IDs. The class C address begins with the
numbers 192 through 254.
Note:
The actual number of usable host IDs is smaller than the
calculated number listed above, because some addresses are
reserved, by convention, for specific uses. See the list in the
next section, “Reserved IP Addresses.”
