Introduction
Packet Voice Processor Commands Manual
The Packet Voice Processor’s Switch Control card performs the following specific
functions:
Receives SIP signaling from SIP Call Agents controlling Media Gateways,
Media Servers, or B2BUAs that may be stand alone or be embedded within
Session Border Controllers.
Makes media processing decisions on a call route based on received session
descriptions or policies decisions derived from call type, call source, or call
destination.
Forwards SIP signaling to a destination call agent or SIP proxy based on the
originating call.
The PVP can be configured to operate with or without a dedicated outbound SIP
proxy.
Note
The PVP is transparent to both SIP-T (Session Initiation Protocol for Telephones)
and NPDI (Number Portability).
1.3.1.1 PVP Configured with Outbound SIP Proxy
The PVP can be easily configured to operate with an outbound SIP proxy by adding
a Route header pointing to that outbound SIP proxy when creating a signaling profile.
In this configuration, to route the INVITE towards the outbound SIP proxy, the PVP
adds a pre-configured Route header into the outbound INVITE. The PVP then sends
the request to the address and port in the Route header. Thus, the request is sent to
the outbound SIP proxy.
In some situations, an inbound SIP proxy (or other inbound network element) may
also make the routing decisions. In these situations, the inbound SIP proxy adds one
or more Route headers into the inbound INVITE. The PVP deletes the first Route
header if it points to PVP itself; otherwise, the Route headers are carried over to the
outbound INVITE in their entirety.
The PVP enters the pre-configured Route header on top of the carried over Route
headers and sends the request to the address and port in the top most Route header-
which is pointing to the outbound SIP proxy.
1.3.1.2 PVP Configured without Outbound SIP Proxy
A pre-configured outbound SIP proxy is not required by the PVP to function properly.
When a pre-configured outbound SIP proxy is unavailable, the PVP sends the
outbound INVITE to the address and port in the top-most Route header (carried over
from the inbound SIP proxy) if it is present. In the absence of the Route header, the
PVP sends the INVITE to the address and port in the Request-URI.
Some providers rewrite the Request-URI to the PVP's prior to relaying it to PVP. If
the address and port points to PVP, then the PVP inspects the "To header" to route
the request further.
In rare situations, the "To header" also gets rewritten to the PVP's address with the
Request-URI. In this case, the PVP cannot route the outbound INVITE since both the
Request-URI and the "To header" point to the PVP and therefore the PVP will reject
the request with a 403 error response code.
