1.3 Signaling

The Packet Voice Processor supports the following signal protocol capabilities for

voice calls.

RFC 3261 SIP (Session Initiation Protocol)

RFC 2327 SDP (Session Description Protocol)

RFC 3262 Reliability of Provisional Responses in Session Initiation Protocol

RFC 3264 An Offer/Answer Model with Session Description Protocol

RFC 3265 SIP Specific Event Notification

1.3.1 PVP SIP Signaling

The Packet Voice Processor’s Switch Control card supports the SIP call processing

function, as well as switching, policy treatment, and enforcement. The Packet Voice

Processor allows for the reception and termination of a SIP invite from a call agent

or a proxy, as well as the generation of new SIP sessions to downstream SIP proxy

or call agents. With the Packet Voice Processor, control of media processing through

a set of centralized control points does not require any significant modifications of the

existing call control system.

Figure 1-5

shows how signaling is performed using SIP

in parallel to the RTP data streams (represented by solid lines).
