Cross-axle differential distributes the torque evenly between axle wheels including cases
of driving on rough roads and turns when the wheels rotate with different speed. When driving on
hoard-to-pass road sections the truck left side and right side wheels have different tire grip the
cross-axle differential can cause the skidding of one of the axle wheels.
Therefore the cross-axle differentials should be locked to increase truck passing ability
on such sections. The semi-axles rotate as a whole when the differentials are locked.
Remember that using the locks increases transmission load significantly, therefore
use the cross-axle differential lock only at certain conditions as per Section «Truck Driving»
taking into account restrictions contained in the Section «Warnings».
Differential is locked by splined ring on the carrier 7 left end face and splined coupling 8
on the splines of left semi-axle 9.
Cross-axle differential lock of intermediate and rear axles has an electronic pneumatic
drive.
Press the switch 28 «
» (Fig.19) on the dashboard to lock intermediate and rear axles
differential from the cab. By that the air is delivered under pressure to the pneumatic cells of lock-
ing mechanisms 2 and moves rod 3 by acting on diaphragm 1 (Fig.42).
Rod moves coupling by fork 11. The coupling is moved along the splines of the semi-
axle and engaged with the splines on projected neck of the carrier.
The Scheme of Pneumatic Control of Cross-axle Differential Lock is shown in Fig. 43.
The rod acts on the switch 12 mounted in the housing of cross-axle differential lock of
intermediate and rear axles; due to this the indicators 1 and 3 (Fig. 42) on the dashboard light up.
By closing the activating valve the pneumatic cells are connected to the atmosphere, the
air goes out, mechanism returns to the initial position by the action of the spring and the indicators
lamps dye out.
The locking mechanism is to be readjusted after repair works with disassembling and re-
placing of its parts. Adjust the mechanism as follows: hoist the axle, brake one brake drum and
lock the semi-axle with differential carrier by letting the air to the air chamber while rotating the
other brake drum.
Screw in the rod motion limiter 5 up to contact to rod end face, lock the differential,
screw the limiter by one more revolution and lock it with the nut 6 by 49,0-60,8 N.m (5,0-6,2
kgf.m).
