the wheel hubs and the front axle steering knuckles (for traces of water). If the oil level in the
units is high, reduce it to the required level and change the oil as soon as possible.
On crossing a ford, prepare all the components for operation in normal road conditions
and repair all water leak-proof connections of units. To keep the truck ready for fording, regularly
check the condition of the hoses, pipes, their joints, assemblies’ packing and repair in due time.
When driving on cross-country terrain, drive at low speed, in particularly difficult
conditions lock the transfer gearbox differential for crossing trenches, ditches and pits. Cross
trenches at a right angle, otherwise when the vehicle tilts, the load could be re-arranged and un-
loaded wheels could slip.
7.4.2 Driving with a trailer. To sustain the operability of the towing device, use the
trailer hitching loop of 90 mm in inner diameter and of 42 mm cross-section, the towing hook
with throat diameter of 48 mm and width in the throat zone of 69 mm. Maximum permissible di-
mensions: loop cross-section 38 mm, hook throat 52 mm, hook width 66 mm.
Replace the towing hooks and loops with dimensions differing from the above men-
tioned with the new ones.
While maneuvering, avoid folding of the trailer until the trailer tow-bar thrusts against
the frame side-member end faces or other truck parts.
Otherwise, the trailer loop could be seized in the towing hook throat and the towing hook
could be broken.
When driving on extremely difficult roads sections uncouple the trailer and after crossing
them, pull it to the truck with the winch. Remember that three-four coils there should be left on
the winch drum. Pull the trailer at the medium rotation frequency of the engine crankshaft. Do not
tow the trailer using the winch rope.
Mind that three or four coils should be left on the winch drum. Pull the trailer at the en-
gine crankshaft medium speed. Do not tow the trailer by the winch rope.
Caution! When driving with applied auxiliary brake on a slippery road with low
friction coefficient and with no solenoid valve engaging the braking system of the trailers,
skidding and folding of the trailer are possible
7.5 Vehicle towing
Towing can be performed with a flexible towing (using a towing cable) or rigid towing
(using tows of «towing rod» or «towing triangle» type), made according to State Standard GOST
25907-89.
When towing and extracting the truck the available towing devices and pull ropes
(chains) are used. Truck towing or using it as a prime mover should comply with the Road Regu-
lations and Safety Instructions that are in effect in the organizations, where the truck is in service.
When the truck is towed with non-working engine, driver of the towed truck must engage
neutral gear in the transfer gearbox. See the order of shifting to neutral gear in the section «5.2.2
Transfer gearbox» of the Manual.
7.5.1 Installation of the towing and auxiliary devices. The prime mover’s and towed
truck’s coupling should be carried out in the following sequence:
- remove the towing cable or «triangle» towing device, depending on the characteristics
of the faults and towing road conditions;
- if necessary, assemble the towing gear;
- hitch the towed truck with the prime mover by the crews;
