improve network’s performance and doesn’t need to occupy CPU period to count or notify
routes.
Its main disadvantage is: when network topology is changed, it lacks the mechanism for auto
re-configuration; users need to configure it manually.
The static route can be re-distributed to the dynamic route protocol, but the route generated
by the dynamic route protocol cannot be re-distributed to a static routing table. Moreover, it
cannot prohibit the route loopback cased by configuring the static route.
The static route is helpful for the security guarantee of the small scale network. Such as the
situation that only one route connects to the external network. For the large scale network, it
can control the security for some kinds of services or links; most networks adopt the dynamic
route protocol among network devices, but one or two static routes can be configured for
special conditions.
The default route is a kind of special route through configuring the static route. In a routing
table, the default route begins in the route format with network 0.0.0.0, mask 0.0.0.0. Via
command show ip route , user can see if it is configured. When the destination address for
receiving packets cannot match any items in the routing table, the packets will chose the
default route.
If no default route is configured and the destination address of the packets is not in the routing
table, the packets then are discarded. At the same time an ICMP packet is returned to the
source end and reports the destination address or destination network is unreachable.
In order to control the size of routing table, a default route can be configured. If a data packet
is failed to lookup the routing table, the default route can be chose for transmitting.
