Configure Vlan dot1q tunnel
This chapter mainly describes the Vlan dot1q tunnel function that Maip series switches
support and how to configure the function.
The contents are as follows:
Introduction to Vlan dot1q tunnel (mapping)
Application examples
Debugging and monitoring
Overview
Vlan dot1q tunnel is the expansion based on 802.1Q protocol. It is realized through
adding a layer of 802.1Q Tag (VLAN Tag) on the original 802.1Q packet header. Via
double-layer Tag, the number of VLANs is increased to 4K×4K. QinQ encapsulates the
VLAN Tag of the customers’ private network in the VLAN tag of the service provider
network.
In this way, packets go through the backbone network (public network) of carriers with
two layers of VLAN tags. In the public network, packets are transmitted only according to
the VLAN tag of the external layer (that is, the VLAN tag of the public network), and the
VLAN tag of the customers’ private network is screened. Therefore, VLAN IDs of the public
network are saved, and a simple L2 VPN tunnel is provided for users.
Vlan dot1q tunnel mapping is also the expansion based on the 802.1Q. The difference
between Vlan dot1q tunnel mapping and Vlan dot1q tunnel is: Vlan dot1q tunnel mapping
is not to encapsulate a layer of 802.1Q Tag in the original 802.1Q of the packet, but to
replace the original 802.1Q Tag of the packet with the new items of the 802.1Q table; and
the packet still has only one layer of 802.1Q table items.
