NAS
The
Network Attached Storage (NAS)
license is included with the system
and, when enabled, allows NAS shares to be exposed to the attached
NAS hosts. This option must be enabled before your NAS shares are
recognized by the backup hosts and applications.
OST
The
OST
license is included with the system and, when enabled, allows a
Open Storage Technology (OST) connection. For Symantec users with
specific versions of the software, another replication option is available
for DXi8500 models through the Symantec OpenStorage (OST) API. For
more details, refer to the
Quantum DXi-Series: Symantec NetBackup OST
Configuration Guide
(PN 6-67079) and
Quantum DXi-Series: Symantec
Backup Exec OST Configuration Guide
(PN 6-67080).
Note:
OST path to tape configuration information is also included
with the
Quantum DXi-Series: Symantec NetBackup OST
Configuration Guide
(PN 6-67079).
Data-at-Rest Encryption
To purchase the Data-at-Rest Encryption license, contact your Quantum
Sales Representative. Data-at-Rest Encryption uses Self Encrypting Drive
(SED) technology to secure all data stored on the DXi8500. This ensures
that a drive that is physically removed from the DXi cannot be read
using another system or device.
Virtual Media – How
Many and What Size?
There is no correct answer to this question as it really depends on your
backup regime and the backup application in use. A DXi system does
not preallocate disk space when a virtual tape cartridge is created, there
can be an inclination to create a lot of large virtual tape cartridges,
greater than the amount that is actually required. While this has no
initial bearing on the DXi’s capacity utilization, it can cause issues down
the track.
Firstly, let us discuss the quantity of virtual media you need to create. As
long as there is sufficient media to hold the amount of backup data for
the required retention period, the quantity does not really matter.
However, it is extremely important, as mentioned earlier, that the aging
and expiry rules of the media pool are defined early. If these rules are
not defined, the virtual tape cartridges will never enter the scratch pool
