We also installed SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server 8 with a 2.4.19 kernel
optimized for Itanium 2.

4.4.3 Installing SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server 8.0

In this section we describe the installation procedure of the SUSE LINUX
Enterprise Server (SLES) 8 and the issues you may find.

Requirements and hardware used

According to the Installation and Administration Addendum found in the doc
directory on the first CD of SLES 8, the requirements to use this Linux distribution
are:

An Itanium or Itanium 2 processor

At least 256 MB of main memory

A hard disk larger than 10 GB

Firmware version EFI 1.0.2 or 1.1.0 (preferred)

Our test system was a multi-node configuration with two pre-production x455
units with:

Four Itanium 2 processors running at 1.4 GHz per server

Four GB of DDR RAM per server

EFI Version 1.10

We also connected an RXE-100 expansion enclosure during the installation.

Tip: Official installation instructions are typically available on the Web.
However, at the time of writing none were published for the x455. Once these
are available, they will be accessible at:
