Chapter 7. Mounting ATM Media Modules in the Expansion Unit
This chapter describes general procedures for mounting ATM media modules in the Expansion Unit. For
specific installation instructions, see the documentation for the individual module.
See the

DANGER and CAUTION notices that concern this product, and their translations.
Note: It is not necessary to power off the workgroup switch when installing or removing modules. (????)
All and all ATM media modules can be installed or removed from the workgroup switch without causing
any disruption to workgroup switch operation.
Guidelines for Mounting ATM Media Modules
Observe these general guidelines when handling, installing, or removing an ATM media module.
Ÿ Electrostatic discharge (ESD) can damage static-sensitive devices on circuit boards.
– Do not remove an ATM media module from its anti-static shielding bag until you are ready to
inspect it.
– To ensure that static charge is removed, touch any installed module's fastener screw before
installing a new module. This will help to dissipate charge energy through the chassis to the
grounded power cord.
– Handle an ATM media module by the faceplate only.
Ÿ Do not twist or otherwise force ATM media modules into the workgroup switch when inserting them
in the workgroup switch’s left and right card guides.
Ÿ To assure proper installation, simply match the left and right card guides as you slide the module
cleanly into place. Do not attempt to push the module all the way into the workgroup switch until you
have verified that module ejectors are OPEN. (See Figure 34 on page 67.)
Ÿ When removing any installed ATM media module (and especially when removing an ATM media
module on which submodules are installed), carefully pull the ATM media module straight out of the
slot. This helps to ensure that installed submodules and host circuit board components are not
damaged as the host module is being removed.

Complete any ATM media module installation by simultaneously closing the left and right ejectors
before tightening the faceplate screws that secure the module to the front of the workgroup switch.
We recommend that you use a screwdriver to tighten and loosen the faceplate screws.
Ÿ After installing an ATM media module, record its slot location on the Hub Planning Chart provided in
the
IBM 8250/8260/8285: Planning and Site Preparation Guide, GA33-0285 and the module planning
chart shipped with each ATM media module. The Hub Planning Chart also makes it easy to record
network connections for any installed module, and to enter remarks that will help you to operate your
workgroup switch in the most convenient and efficient manner possible.

